A Little History
One of Minneapolis’s many landmarks is a strange sculpture created by Claes Oldenburg called “Spoonbridge and Cherry”. This massive sculpture sites as a center piece of the Walker Art Center’s Sculpture Garden where it has a wonderful view of the skyline of downtown Minneapolis and the Basilica. Many times a day there are tourists and locals getting there pictures taken with this striking work of art. It has become of a cultural icon of Minneapolis and Minnesota alike, much like hot-dish, cold weather, and phrases such as “don’cha ya know then there” and “you bettcha”.
I have spent many hours with friends and in solitude in the Sculpture Gardens. This can lead to anarchy in ones brain, so to make a not so long story longer, one day I got thinking. I noted that most people who photographed the Spoonbridge and Cherry, almost always did it the same way. They face the cherry so the Basilica, and the skyline was a part of the picture. Most of the postcards around town had a similar shot sans people standing in front of it (with the glaring exception of the Walker’s own postcards).
After several months of thinking about this phenomenon I started to photograph the Spoonbridge and Cherry in as many different angles and ways as possible. Below are a few examples of how beautiful the sculpture can be in different points of view:
